Tornados

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both a cumulonimbus (or, in rare cases, a cumulus) cloud base and the surface of the earth. Tornadoes come in many sizes, but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, with the narrow end touching the earth. Often, a cloud of debris encircles the lower portion of the funnel.

Most tornadoes have wind speeds of 110 mph (175 km/h) or less, are approximately 250 feet (75 m) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before dissipating. However, some tornadoes attain wind speeds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), stretch more than a mile (1.6 km) across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 km).

Kansas' Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius said Monday that the effort to recover from the damage caused by tornadoes that hit six Kansas counties over the weekend is being hampered by the war in Iraq.

Emergency Transmitter

A transmitter designed for use in locating downed aircraft or vessels in distress. Abbreviated ELT. An emergency position indicating radio beacon ("EPIRB") includes a watertight housing with an ON-OFF switch on the outside of the housing which does not require holes through the housing wall. A floatation collar on the housing maintains the EPIRB in an upright position in the water and provides a storage cavity for a lanyard. Conductive grids on the interior of the housing either shield the EPIRB electronics from antenna radiation and form the lower half of the antenna, or couple the antenna to the water which acts as a ground plane, depending on whether the EPIRB is floating in the water or is surrounded by air. The European Union executive unveiled plans Thursday to equip all new cars sold in the EU with an emergency transmitter to ensure rapid medical help in the event of a crash. Around 2,000 lives could be saved a year once the automatic emergency call ("eCall") technology is in place, the European Commission said, targeting a start date of 2009 for the devices. The transmitter would be activated automatically by pressure sensors that would detect a sudden impact, or manually by an injured occupant of the car, and send an SOS via the EU-wide emergency call number 112.

End Of The Game

Hope is a belief in a positive outcome.

Brian lost his hope because he saw a plane fly down his camp and the plane did not see him. When he heard the plane coming he turn the signal fire on, but anyway the plane did not see him.

Hope is important for Brian´s survival because if he has no hope, he can not keep playing this game(The game of Survival). He can not live for ever in the wilderness.

Heart Attacks

In Hatchet a heart attack was suffered by the pilot while he was flying the plane. The plane was small, a Cesna 406. Brian was with him when this happened. Brian was scared and did not know what to do. While the pilot suffered the heart attack he changed the direction of the plane.

Heart Attacks are also known as AMI. It is a desease state that occurs when the blood supply to a part of the heart is interrupted. Classical Symptoms of AMI (Acute Myocardial Infarction) include chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, sweating, and axiety of feeling of impeding doom.

In the USA, diseases of the heart are the leading cause of death, causing a higher mortality than cancer. Risk Factors:

5. Obesity

Effective treatments for heart attack are available that can decrease the chances of sudden death and long-term complications. To be most effective, these treatments must be given fast—within 1 hour of the start of heart attack symptoms. Acting fast can save your life and limit damage to your heart.
